 Saint of the Month: St. Nicholas

In December, the Church celebrates St. Nicholas, the beloved bishop whose quiet generosity inspired the tradition of Santa Claus. Far from the commercial hustle of the season, the real St. Nicholas was a man deeply rooted in the Gospel. He cared for the poor, defended the truth of the faith, and gave generously in secret, expecting nothing in return. His life invites us to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas: love poured out, gifts given from the heart, and compassion for those in need.
As we journey through Advent, may St. Nicholas teach us to give with joy, serve with humility, and prepare room in our hearts for Christ.

Loving God,
As we prepare for the coming of Jesus this Advent,
help our family to live with hope, joy, and generosity.
Through the example of St. Nicholas,
teach us to care for those in need
and to share Your love with others.
May our hearts be ready to welcome Christ this Christmas.
Amen.

Family Activity: St. Nicholas Kindness Bags

In honor of St. Nicholas’ secret generosity, create “Kindness Bags” as a family.
Fill small bags with items like:

• socks
• granola bars
• travel-size toiletries
• gloves
• a prayer card or handwritten note
   

Keep them in your car to give to someone in need, or donate them to a local shelter.
Talk as a family about how small acts of kindness can make a big difference—and how St. Nicholas teaches us to give without expecting anything in return.

As we journey through Advent toward Christmas, the example of St. Nicholas reminds us what this season is truly about: giving from the heart, caring for the poor, and preparing a warm welcome for Christ.
