Saint of the Month: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
January invites us to begin again—fresh starts, new commitments, and renewed hope. It is fitting that we celebrate St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint, whose life was filled with both great joys and deep challenges. A wife, mother, widow, convert to the Catholic faith, teacher, and foundress, she trusted God through grief, uncertainty, and change. Her love for the Eucharist sustained her, and her courage helped build the foundation of Catholic education in the United States.
As we begin a new year, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton reminds us that holiness grows in ordinary life—in our families, our work, our struggles, and our perseverance in trusting God’s plan.
Family Prayer for January
Dear God,
Thank You for the gift of a new year
and for the example of
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
Help our family grow in faith, love, and trust in You.
Give us courage when life is difficult
and hearts that are kind, patient, and grateful.
May we always keep You at the center of our lives.
Amen.
Family Activity: Gratitude & Blessings Jar
Inspired by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s trust in God, begin the year with a
Gratitude & Blessings Jar.
Place a jar in your home and invite everyone to write down blessings, answered prayers, or moments of gratitude throughout the month. Younger children can draw pictures instead of writing.
At the end of January, gather as a family, read the notes, and thank God together for His love and care.
January Reflection
January is a time of beginnings—a clean page full of hope. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton reminds us that new beginnings often come through trust, courage, and faith in God’s love. She faced loss, change, and challenge, yet she continued to move forward with confidence in God’s plan.
As we step into this new year, may we, like St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, place our lives in God’s hands, love generously, and remain faithful no matter what comes.
